Austen House
Ashford
Another architect had designed a first-floor extension for this detached, two-storey 1990s property, but the plan fell short of the owners’ ambitions. I met them on RIBA’s ‘Ask the Expert’ stand at the Grand Designs Show in London’s Excel. During our 15-minute consultation I reviewed the drawings – of the existing and proposed building – and sketched out a few alternative ideas for making better use of its current footprint, and also for rationalising the extension. My aim, as always, was to make the plans work harder – in this case, ground and first floors – so as to maximise the usable space. This was achievable with a more modest timber-clad
extension (covering just 18 square metres) into the available grounds at the front of the property. By discussing several designs with the couple and their children, we came up with a new music/multi-functional space that could serve as a home learning room. Mum and Dad each get their own ‘working from home’ office, together with a new master bedroom and en suite. Re- positioning a re-modelled, large terrace porch alongside the timber-clad extension unites the property with its country garden, providing spaces for privacy and interaction. The works – providing a more spacious family-friendly home through a small extension and creative re-modelling – are due to take place in 2021.
