London Road

London SE23

The owners of this four-storey semi-detached Victorian home wanted a ground-floor extension into the rear garden. Rather than a regular box extension, their preference was to make full use of the available width, while ensuring the new structure sat in harmony with the garden and the house. My solution was to design a projecting roof canopy that over-sails the returning side terrace – a folly that creates the illusion that the extension spans the full width of the building. A section of this side roof is open to mirror the corresponding pair of skylights illuminating the extension’s dayroom and dining areas. The roof at the rear also acts as a protective wing over the rear terrace, while the doors – both bi-folding and sliding recessed – open up the interior to the vista of mature trees that adorn the boundaries of the garden.
