A picture may paint a thousand words, but even a rough sketch can conjure up a new vision of your home. So it proved at a Grand Designs Live Show where a visitor brought along some photographs of their semi-detached Victorian house in Kingston, Surrey. In the course of our 15-minute consultation, the ideas I outlined were enough to give this client the confidence to commission my design for a large side and rear ground-floor extension. Of course, this design evolved following my visit and survey, and discussions with the property owners. For example, initial preference for a brick-faced structure with wooden bi-folding doors gave way to white rendered walls to match the rest of the property and black metal frames. Inside, also, we generated several options and spatial plans for the internal alterations. The result was a spacious kitchen/diner and day room that delighted the owners.
